Volunteering at BFREE
By Kiyana Reynolds
Volunteering with the North American Freshwater Turtle Research Group (NAFTRG) at BFREE was a truly life-changing experience that deepened my love for nature and strengthened my commitment to conservation. From the moment I arrived, the BFREE team was incredibly welcoming, creating an atmosphere of support, curiosity, and shared purpose.
The journey to the field station was both exciting and beautiful. Traversing through lush forests, crossing the river, and navigating well-marked trails with clear signs made the experience feel like an immersion into a hidden world of biodiversity. Each step brought me closer to understanding the importance of protecting these pristine environments.

One of the highlights of my time at BFREE was witnessing all nine species of freshwater and terrestrial turtles found in the region, a rare but unforgettable opportunity. The processing techniques used by the team were thorough yet easy to follow, and I always felt included and supported in each task. The team’s patience and clarity made learning not just manageable but genuinely enjoyable.
After long days of rewarding fieldwork or scenic hikes, we returned to excellent meals prepared by Mr. Eddie. His cooking was always on point, delicious, plentiful, and made with care. These moments around the table offered a chance to rest, connect, and reflect with others who share a passion for the natural world.
My time at BFREE taught me that conservation is not only about protecting species, it’s about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and empowering the next generation to care. The advice and encouragement I received from the team helped me grow in confidence, and their passion reminded me that we each have a role in shaping the future. BFREE is truly making a difference, not just in research and species protection, but in fostering a culture of hope, education, and global stewardship. I left with unforgettable memories, a renewed sense of purpose, and a heart more committed than ever to the conservation of our planet.
