TRANSPORTATION:

All visitors will need to hike the 6-mile entry road to arrive and depart from the BFREE Biological Research Station. Begin the hike along the old logging road off the Southern Highway through seasonally flooded savannah, stopping at the Bladen Nature Reserve ranger base to check in and continuing on through a transition zone where pine trees, oaks, and sedges transition to lowland tropical rainforest habitat. Puma and Jaguarundi tracks lead you along this easy flat hike until you reach the crystal clear Bladen River. Look for wildlife and their signs such as Grey foxes, White-tailed deer, Collared and White Lipped Peccary, Jaguar, and Tapir as well as bird species such as Fork-tailed flycatchers, Yellow-headed parrots, Aplomado falcons, and, on rare occasions, Solitary eagles and Ornate Hawk-eagles. The hike takes approximately 2.5 hours.

The entry road can be reached by bus or taxi. For those arriving by personal vehicle, it may be possible to park across the street in a gated lot for $5 per day.  No one should ever attempt to drive the entry road without prior permission.
