Currently, BFREE offers informal scholarships to Belizean staff members in two main areas when funding and opportunities are available:

  • Tuition, school books and supplies reimbursement for the children of BFREE staff members.    Primary School in Belize is tuition-free; however, annual costs for parents include registration fees, school books, required school supplies and uniforms.  High School is even more of an investment because the expenses associated with books are so much greater than in primary school. Families often choose not to send their children to high school because they simply cannot afford it.
  • Tuition support for staff members interested in pursuing continued education, internships in Belize or abroad and professional certifications. Over the years, BFREE has worked to identify these opportunities for professional skill-building and learning beyond traditional education.

By establishing the Jacob A. Marlin Scholarship Program, we will formalize the process of giving annual scholarships to the children of Belizean staff members as well as continuing education opportunities for staff members.  In the long-term, we envision expanding the program to also sponsor two and three-week internships at BFREE for Belizean High School and College students interested in the field of conservation.

With your contribution, you will be supporting BFREE’s mission and also honoring Jacob’s life-long dedication to research and environmental education. Please Donate Now to help us meet our goal of providing seven scholarship opportunities during the 2016/17 school year.
